PREFACE
Why we travel!
We remember when we had the revelation that it was possible to interrail with our students through Europe. We had been planning a trip to the European Parliament, which in itself is not a remarkable thing these days since many students are able to experience such a trip. However, with threats of melting poles and stronger tropical storms around the world, it is not always that you book plane tickets for a whole class of students with ease and without a bad conscience. We wanted to show that other means of transportation were possible. We wanted to show that life is a journey, not a destination.
So, when it was all clear that we could go through with the trip, we realized how perfect it all was. We want to educate interrailers. An interrailer is, according to us anyway, a person who can solve problems in the moment, on the spot. An interrailer understands his or her world, and also him/herself enough to make wise decisions. An interrailer understands that things will rarely play out as planned, but with the right knowledge and cooperative skills, things will almost always play out perfectly anyway.
We hope that this book might inspire others to leave their comfort zone. Because adventure makes us grow. We are strengthened by the broadened perspective on the world.
Even though the trip might not have lived up to any of our expectations, in hindsight, we are all incredibly satisfied with our trip, both teachers and students. The students came closer together as a group, everyone has learned a lot and I believe that we all will remember our interrail week as long as we live.
So please, read about our experience, be inspired by it, and most of all; travel.
To summarize, three lines from famous American poet Robert Frost:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
